Practical steps
- Identify whether the book is a store license or a personal file before you blame EPUB.
- Prefer the original EPUB when the app accepts it. Convert only if the device refuses the file.
- Keep a DRM-free backup of personal documents outside the reading app.
- Sideload path for EPUB: Any app that opens EPUB: Apple Books, Kobo, Google Play uploads, Calibre, Thorium, and many others.
Mistakes to avoid
- Renaming .azw3 to .epub. That does not change the format.
- Converting a DRM'd store file in Calibre. It will fail; that is expected.
- Sending a scanned image PDF to an e-ink device and expecting EPUB-like fonts.
- Deleting the store app copy because you also have a personal file with a similar title.
